My Computer is Running Slow?

There are many reasons why a computer is running slow but here are a few things to try before contacting a computer professional. If you never performed preventative maintenance on your PC that's a good place to start.

*these tips will work with all versions of windows just the steps involved will differ*

First step is preventative maintenance you want to delete all temporary Internet files, cookies, history. This step is easily down in Internet option in your browser the location is all different depending on browser you are using.

INTERNET EXPLORER


  1. open Internet explorer
  2. locate tools top right corner
  3. click on Internet options
  4. click on delete which will give you some options
Next step is we are going to check the hard drive to see if we can free up hard drive space, de-fragment the hard drive, and check for errors.

HARD DRIVE

  1. Navigate to my computer
  2. Right-click my computer
  3. Click on properties
  4. Click disk cleanup and this will give you some options
Defragging your hard drive is only necessary if you check with analyze if its needed select the hard drive and defrag. Windows 7 and 8 defragging is done on a schedule time automatically.

DEFRAGGING THE HARD DRIVE

  1. Navigate to my computer
  2. Right-click my computer
  3. Click on properties
  4. Click on tools
  5. Choose de-fragmentation
Another reason why the computer may be acting slow is file system errors and bad sectors on the hard drive.

CHECKING FOR ERRORS ON THE HARD DRIVE

  1. Navigate to my computer
  2. Right-click my computer
  3. Click on properties
  4. Click on tools
  5. Choose check now which will schedule error checking once the computer is restart
One reason why computers can start running slow are computer programs running in the background.There are some programs that have to start at start up such as firewall, and anti-virus. MSCONFIG is the utility used to config start up items and be advised if not sure what you are doing ask a technician.

ACCESSING START UP PROGRAMS

  1. Click windows logo bottom left hand corner
  2. Type in the bottom window msconfig and hit enter
  3. Click msconfig icon
Major reason why computers slow down is viruses and other pests like Trojans,worms, and malware. Make sure you have a good anti-virus that is update weekly, and only use one anti-virus software since they may cause conflicts and slow down your computer.
